The TF2 Marketplace for Trading, Buying and Selling Items

Merchant.TF is a TF2 marketplace where you can trade Team Fortress 2 items directly, instead of swapping keys for metal, searching classifieds for the items you want, or manually selling your items one by one. Select the items you want to trade from your backpack, pick the items you want from our stock, click Trade, and a bot sends you a Steam trade offer within seconds. If your side is worth more, the extra stays in your balance for your next trade.

How TF2 Trading Works

History of Trading

Trading on Steam started with TF2. The Mann-Conomy Update added item trading to Team Fortress 2 in September 2010, along with the Mann Co. Store, crates, keys and Unusual hats. Valve rolled trading out to the rest of Steam about a year later. When the Steam Community Market opened in December 2012, TF2 items were the first thing you could buy and sell on it.

Keys and Metal

Most Team Fortress 2 traders deal in two in-game currencies: Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys, with metal as the change. Keys never drop in-game. New keys only come from the Mann Co. Store, which keeps their value steady and lets players swap them like cash. On Merchant.TF, you can often buy TF2 keys for less than the Store or the Steam Community Market charges.

Metal comes in three sizes, Scrap, Reclaimed and Refined, which traders shorten to scrap, rec and ref. Three scrap make a rec, and three rec make a ref. Prices are usually quoted in ref, where a rec counts as 0.33, so 2.33 ref means two Refined and one Reclaimed.

Ways to Trade TF2 Items

TF2 items are typically traded in three main ways:

With other players.
Send trade offers to friends, or post what you have on community trading sites, then negotiate in keys and metal. One of the benefits of trading this way is that there's no fee, but it takes time, and manual cash deals with strangers mean trusting them to pay.
On the Steam Community Market.
Valve's own market is a safe and simple option, but sales go to your Steam Wallet, and that money only works on Steam. Steam's fees add 15% on top of every sale, and items you buy are trade-locked for 7 days.
With a trading site's bots.
A site like Merchant.TF keeps a stock of items and sends trades via bots. You skip the bargaining and the risk of getting scammed, and you can pay or cash out in real money.

Merchant.TF vs the Steam Community Market

Items on Merchant.TF cost 20-30% less than on the Steam Community Market on average. What you get from our bots can be traded again right away, with no 7-day wait, and when you sell, you get real money instead of Wallet funds.

TF2 Item Qualities Explained

Every TF2 item has a quality, which you can easily spot by the color of the item's name in your inventory. For example, yellow is Unique, orange is Strange, and purple is Unusual. Together with some other properties, these can greatly change what traders are willing to pay for an item.

Item Qualities

Unique.
Ironically, this is the most common item quality. Most drops, crafts and Mann Co. Store items are Unique, such as The Team Captain or the Mann Co. Supply Crate Key.
Strange.
Counts a stat as you play, usually kills. Both weapons and cosmetics can be Strange, and they rank up and change name as the count climbs. A fresh Strange Flame Thrower starts out with that name, but after 8,500 kills it becomes a "Hale's Own Flame Thrower".
Unusual.
Some of the rarest items in the game. Unusuals are cosmetics, taunts or weapons that have a special particle effect, for example Scorching Flames, which adds a green flame particle effect to items. When opening crates or cases, you have less than a 1% chance of getting an item with the Unusual quality. With Unusuals, the effect can matter as much as the item, so the same hat can sell for very different prices depending on what effect is floating above it. There are thousands of combinations, making Unusuals a favorite among collectors.
Genuine.
Promotional items, usually crossovers with other games or events. Many also come in Unique quality, but Genuine indicates that the item came straight from the original promotion.
Vintage.
These are items players owned before the Mann-Conomy Update in 2010.
Haunted.
Comes from TF2's Halloween events, often carrying restrictions that make the item only visible during holidays such as Halloween / Full Moon.
Collector's.
Identified by the dark red tint on their item name, these are items made with Collector's Chemistry Sets that no longer drop in-game. Along with a set, 200 copies of the Unique version of an item are required to make one Collector's item, which keeps these items rare and expensive.
Decorated.
Weapons with a War Paint pattern. Each has a grade, from Civilian up to Elite, and a wear level, from Factory New to Battle Scarred.

What Else Changes an Item's Value

Australium.
Also known as Aussies, Australiums are a rare golden version of certain weapons. Australiums always come in the Strange item quality and only drop from Advanced and Expert Mann Up tours. The Golden Frying Pan is the rarest of these, often selling for thousands of dollars in real-world value.
Killstreak tiers.
Killstreak weapons track your current streak and show special effects. Specialized Killstreak adds a colored sheen, and Professional Killstreak adds a sheen plus an eye effect called a killstreaker.
Festive and Festivized.
Festive weapons are weapons with Christmas lights built in, whereas Festivized weapons are items where the lights were added using a Festivizer. Traders usually value original Festives much higher, even though the items look very similar, so it is important that these are not confused with their Festivized counterparts.
Non-Craftable.
Weapons bought from the Mann Co. Store, and cosmetics bought there before late 2012, can't be used in crafting. Traders price them separately from craftable versions.
Paint.
Changes a cosmetic's color. Most paints don't change the value of an item much, but the more popular ones such as A Distinctive Lack of Hue (Black), An Extraordinary Abundance of Tinge (White), Pink as Hell (Hot Pink), and The Bitter Taste of Defeat and Lime (Lime Green) add some value when applied to an item.
Strange Parts.
You can add up to three Strange Parts to a Strange item, and each one tracks an extra stat, such as heavies killed or buildings destroyed.

Before Your First Trade

  1. Set up your Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. Without it, Steam holds traded items for up to 15 days.
  2. Set your inventory to public. In Steam, go to Edit Profile, then Privacy Settings, and set your profile and inventory to Public so the site can load your items.
  3. Add your trade URL. Find it on the Trade Offers page of your Steam inventory, under "Who can send me Trade Offers?", and paste it into your user settings so we can send you trades.
  4. Make room in your backpack. Our bots can't send items to a full backpack. How many slots you have depends on whether your account is F2P or Premium in TF2, and whether you have used backpack expanders.

TF2 Trading Tips

Price-Check Before You Trade

With every Scream Fortress and Smissmas update come new Unusual effects and cases, and that can push the price of items up or down overnight. Since most trades are priced in keys, the current key price has a large effect on the price of all items. Before a big trade, we suggest that you look up recent sales on the Steam Community Market and other sites. We'd rather you check and come back than trade with doubts.

Watch Out for Common TF2 Trading Scams

TF2 items are worth real money, and once a trade goes through, it is final. Because of this, scammers often target TF2 trades, mostly in cash deals with strangers or by impersonating Steam Support. Make sure you check every trade offer in the Steam mobile app before you accept it. When you trade with our bots, we always show you the bot's name, avatar, and level on-site before you accept the trade, so you can verify that these details match the trade you are accepting in the Steam app. We'll also never message you first on Steam or Discord, so anyone who does isn't us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Merchant.TF?

Merchant.TF is a TF2 marketplace for trading Team Fortress 2 items. You can swap your items for ours, buy items via card or crypto, or sell items for PayPal or crypto, and every trade is done through official Steam trade offers.

Is Merchant.TF legit?

Yes, Merchant.TF is legit. We're rated Excellent (4.8/5) on Trustpilot and have served tens of thousands of traders since 2024. You sign in through Steam OpenID, so we never see your password or account details, and we show you every trade detail so you can confirm it matches in the Steam app. Additionally, we use reputable third-party providers such as Stripe and PayPal to handle payments, so we don't handle or store your payment details.

Is it safe to sign in to trading sites with Steam?

Yes. Signing in with Steam takes you to Steam's own page, and Steam only shares your public profile and SteamID with the site. Your password and Steam Guard codes never leave Steam. That said, before you log in, especially on a site you don't know, it is good practice to check that the address bar says steamcommunity.com. If it says anything else, it could be a site that is impersonating Steam's official login page.

What is the best TF2 trading site?

We're biased, so here's a better answer. The best TF2 trading site is fast, shows you prices up front, and processes trades and payments through official methods. We've built Merchant.TF around those principles and are constantly working to provide the best experience possible to our users. If you have any suggestions or things we could do better, feel free to reach out through our live support and we would be happy to hear your feedback.

Should I trade or sell my TF2 items?

If you want to exchange your items, use the trade page. There you can swap yours for anything in our stock, and any leftover value stays in your balance for next time. If you want to sell your items for real money or are cashing out, use the sell page.

Do I need to deposit money to trade?

Not at all. As long as the items you offer are worth as much as the items you pick, there are no additional fees or need to deposit money. If they're worth less, you can top up the difference by card, Cash App, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto.

Does Merchant.TF charge any fee for trading?

No, trading carries no additional fees. Deposits by card or payment app carry a small processing fee, which is shown before you pay, but you can avoid these by using crypto deposits which only cost the network fee.

Why is my item worth less than the same item in our inventory?

Like any shop, we buy items for a little less than we sell them for. That gap lets us run the site without charging additional trading fees. You can always see the value of both sides before you trade, and we encourage you to compare prices on other marketplaces to make sure you're getting the best deal.

What payment methods can I use?

You can pay by card, Cash App, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, USDC, or USDT. When you sell, we pay out by PayPal or crypto.

How fast are trades?

A TF2 trade on Merchant.TF takes seconds. Our bots send the offer as soon as you click trade, and the items are yours as soon as you accept in the Steam app. Some trades are split across several bots and arrive as separate offers. In that case, accept the first one, and the remaining offers will be sent afterward.
